The Lewisburg Police Department is currently investigating a series of vandalisms at the First United Methodist Daycare, located at 214 4^th Avenue North in Lewisburg. The vandalisms began on November 1^st and have occurred on several dates since. The vandalisms are believed to have occurred only on weekend nights. During these incidents the playground equipment and other items were damaged or destroyed.

The Lewisburg Police Department is continuing to investigate a homicide which occurred on Hill Street in Lewisburg. The victim has been identified as Kevin Griffin, age 26, of 490 Hill Street in Lewisburg. The victim’s body was discovered at his residence on July 29, 2013. Investigators believe the homicide occurred on the 19^th of July, 2013. Further details of this investigation are not being released at this time. 

Investigators are interested in talking to anyone that may have seen or had contact with the victim during the week prior to, or on the day of July 19^th. LEWISBURG, Tenn. – When the temperatures drop during the winter months, heaters help us to stay warm. However, some heating sources can pose danger when proper care is not taken. Marshall Medical Center’s (MMC’s) Emergency Department and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) offer advice on the safe use of winter heating sources. 

According to ACEP, each year people are burned, start fires, get shocked and even die from carbon monoxide poisoning because they do not take proper precautions. 

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. Loss of consciousness can occur if high levels are inhaled.

“Every home should have a carbon monoxide detector, and if you have any of these symptoms, you should seek emergency care,” said Dr. Mitchell. 

When preparing your home’s winter heating source, the following safety advice is recommended: 

• Check all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make certain they are in working order and have fresh batteries. There should be one of each detector on every floor of your house.
• Have a professional inspect your gas furnace at least once a year. A furnace with leaks or cracks can be dangerous, leaking carbon monoxide or possibly causing a fire.
• If you use a fireplace, have a professional inspect and clean it every year. Also make sure any flammable materials are kept away from the open flame area. Never burn trash, cardboard boxes or items that may contain chemicals that can release toxins. 
• If you use a wood-burning stove, have a professional inspect and clean the chimney each year. Make sure you have a safe perimeter around the heater. Place the heater on a flame-resistant surface, use a screen to prevent sparks and hot coals from coming out of the stove.
• Never use a range (electric or gas) or oven as a heating source. It is not only a fire hazard; it can release dangerous fumes such as carbon monoxide.
• If you use an electric space heater, make sure it is away from water or anything flammable like curtains, paper, blankets or furniture. Check for any faulty wiring that can cause electric shock or fire. 
• Supervise children and pets around space heaters and turn them off before leaving the room or going to sleep.

COLUMBIA, Tenn.— Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) recently became one of the first in Tennessee to offer a new treatment option for patients suffering from coronary artery disease (CAD). On November 4, interventional cardiologists Fathi Ali, M.D., and Kevin Maquiling, M.D., began utilizing St. Jude Medical’s ILUMIEN Optis™ PCI Optimization System. 

The ILUMIEN Optis™ system is the first and only integrated diagnostic technology that combines 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) technologies on one system. By using the combined system, physicians at MRMC now gain advanced physiological and anatomical insights that can improve the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. 

“It adds another dimension to the existing coronary angiography by allowing us to look at the arteries from within, hence helping to individualize lesion assessment and treatment including placement of stents,” said Ali. 

“The ILUMIEN Optis™ system allows us to have the information we need in one place and helps us accurately diagnose and optimize therapy for our patients,” added Maquiling. “It is a great tool to optimize treatment of coronary disease by revealing which blockage needs treatment and how to treat it.” 

With the integration of these two technologies, Maury Regional physicians can identify the precise measurement and dimensions of any narrowings responsible for obstructing blood flow to the patient’s heart, as well as determine vessel size and structure. FFR technology is used to determine the severity of blood flow blockages in coronary arteries allowing physicians to better identify specific narrowings. OCT technology is used to visualize and measure important vessel characteristics used in guiding stent selection and deployment as well as providing post-stenting information to help ensure the procedure is successful. 

Patients with CAD experience decreased oxygen delivery to the heart because of plaque or cholesterol build-up inside arteries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CAD is the most common form of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.
